head vase
hand glazed crackle finish. Size: 11.5"H. The deer has long been a symbol of longevity in Chinese culture
Made in China. The crackle finish on this wide mouthed porcelain vase gives it a dark antique like tint. It is ideal for flowers or a center piece. It has a unique oriental shape, adopted from the "Ming Jar" storage porcelains. The deer head embellishments on the sides represent longevity; Chinese folklore holds that the deer lives for one thousand years. Ancient Chinese medicine used deer hooves and antlers as a cure all for old age. This item is handmade in Canton China using traditional clays and kilns. and they adorn the entire body of the umbrella stand. The porcelain itself extends the Taoist theme, as it is rigid and strong, yet delicate. Umbrella stands can also be used for floral arrangements. Tall curly willow looks dramatic in an umbrella stand in the corner of a room. Long lengths of lucky bamboo, birds of paradise, or ginger flowers make for a tropical center piece and can be placed in an umbrella stand on a credenza, dining or coffee table top.

Hand made, exquisite workmanship. Wonderful details in three dimensional relief work. Size:13"H. Made in China. The hand painted scenery on this porcelain umbrella stand is a classic display of the themes and dynamics of Oriental art. The depiction of birds and flowers generally has a deeper meaning than simply pleasing the eye. The greater context is a demonstration of Yin and Yang, the Taoist balance to the universe. There is an inherent drama between the birds, which flow and fly freely, and the flowers and plants that are rooted in place, fixed to the earth. They are at opposite extremes in this respect, yet one cannot survive without the other. Flowers depend on the flight of birds and insects to pollinate and propagate the next generation, while the birds depend on the flowering plants for fruits and shelter. In Asian arts it is this dynamic, more so than an individual scene, that plays the central role for appreciation. In addition, the flowers themselves are representative of larger themes. The branch of plum blossom flowers symbolizes longevity, because it blooms in the winter months when all else lays dormant.

have a collection of head vases myself and have learned that ones made by Wales such as this one, are hard to come by. This little girl is darling and in near perfect condition with only one minute flake on a rose petal on her hat and some very minor paint loss. She stands almost 6" tall, and will just brighten up any space you decide to display her. Her sticker is not completely intact, but you can clearly see Wales. She would make and excellent gift! There is no such thing as a Nippon Head Vase. Head vases were never made by Morimura Bros. nor during the Nippon era. All of the head vases advertised as Nippon are FAKE. They are sold by importers in lots of 10s and 100s. Some are marked with the fake M in Wreath Mark, the fake gold script Hand Painted Nippon and some without any marking at all. When they come to this country, they have a "Made in China" sticker on the bottoms which is then removed by unscrupulous sellers before listing them for sale on ebay or in other venues. There is a Fake Head Vase site which is run by Chrissy and she has many more fake head vase pictures shown on her site.
